Yes, there are unfinished manuscripts. What I also have a lot of are opinions about films I watch. This is nothing against the writers, talents, etc. They’re just takes that I have about the film in the moment. I think that saying it aloud might give me the push to figure out what I’m trying to complete.
I have like a week left of my STARZ subscription. I added it to watch two series - one I liked and one I gave up on. With everything completed on Max I have nothing to watch at the moment so I’m circling back to this network’s movies.
The opening of Monster Hunter had me pause. A pirate ship surfing across the desert with people dressed in fantasy wear. A diabolical dragon-like monster attacking the ship with the inhabitants fighting to stay alive.
What are they doing there? Why should we care? Thirty seconds was dedicated to two characters with no names or backstory fighting to stay alive against a creature as large as the vessel they were close to falling off of. If they didn’t manage to crash, what was the point in surviving that desolate place?
There are no answers as we cut to a scene of a mercenary crew in our own world that is one minute driving through a war zone and the next in the never ending Dune-esque sands from the opening scene.
Robert Rodriguez’ Predators did it great. You take a bunch of mercenaries in the top of their game and you dropped them in the Predator’s backyard. That was a great film, the difference was that in the first ten minutes of that film I knew exactly who each character was with their wardrobe, character, and actions immediately tying them to the world they belonged.
There’s camaraderie with the characters in Monster Hunter but I have nothing else to go on and we are almost at twenty minutes. One of the characters just identified the size of one of these planet’s creatures as a dinosaur. They have weapons, two jeeps, and they’re up against dinosaurs.
I’ll continue to watch, but these are my first thoughts. This could be a bad take.
