Squad to Hacks
I didn’t realize tonight was the season finale of The Pitt. Thursday nights won’t be the same. There’s nothing like having grapes and pistachios in a bowl and lounging back watching a room full of doctors saving lives in real time in an ER. What am I supposed to do with myself now?
The team got through the night and most of the casualties from the festival were saved. Watching Noah Wylie break down in exhaustion and struggle to pull himself together before getting back out on the floor does it for me. His breakdowns calm me. I don’t think this is just a me thing. The last shot of the season is him putting his headset on and walking through the park headed home. He’s in his blue hoodie and has his earbuds in with his backpack hanging on one side. It was watching gen-x walk home in 2025, with the knowledge that things are going to be okay, but barely. Sitting at the park benches watching him walk away were millennials to gen-z third year med students who began the shift learning how to be a doctor from him and now learning his chill as he heads home. We’ll see them all in season 2 sometime next year.
I went right into the first two episodes of the fourth season of Hacks. I don’t like watching the girls fight. They’ll get through it but they have to make that late night show a hit.
Debra will always be cool to me. Even before the late night deal she headlined a Vegas show that had over twenty years of nonstop shows on the strip. That’s a flex. I’ve never thought of late night being harder than stand-up because I grew up watching Bill Maher and the like and I just thought the professions went hand-in-hand.
These first two episodes are expressing that half the writing for late night ends up on the floor due to politics before it even has a chance to breathe on the stage.
The first three seasons was Debra winning on the mic. I hope as this season progresses we get to see more of that. I miss them being in Vegas. Watching them struggle in the Hollywood studio system is heavy.
Our doctors are on hiatus. Our comics are getting revved up to try and win the dwindling late night viewership. There are no other weekly shows to root for right now. I guess I can read more?
