Great Scot!
I planned to accomplish a lot this weekend. I would do all of the things while binge-watching The Pitt on HBO and The Couple Next Door on Starz.
The Pitt is the first medical drama that I’ve enjoyed in a few years. We’re back in the House, M.D. and ER arena. The hospital keeps a baseline of chaos, but Noah Wyle’s character is a great combo of House’s acuity and the humanity of shows like ER or Chicago Hope. I trust this doctor and I think it’s a nice (yet eye-rolling) change that his teammates are third-year med students. I’m comparing them to the students I met when I worked at a medical college, these kids seem brighter, but it’s a TV show they weren’t going to film the ones that take half an hour to find parking. The first season takes place over the span of a single day. For those of us that have lived nights in an ER, it really is that entertaining, but only from the POV of a single room and what happens at the nurse’s station. I don’t know if the season is over or if it’s just 8 episodes, but I’ll come back for more.
The Couple Next Door is the kind of book I would skip at Barnes and Noble because I would guess the ending on page one - someone gets their feelings hurt and that explains away a murder and a decades-old mystery.
The actors make this story. First off, no one marries a guy that looks like Sam Heughan and lives in the suburbs. Are you serious? A guy like that is just in the burbs working a 40-hour and paying a mortgage? No, he gets cast in a time traveling love story and stars as Jamie Fraser. He is not real. If he is and you’re living across the street married to another man, no one can fault you for that.
I liked the character of Becka. If you’re married to Heughan, you have to be chill. She just did her own thing and understood when he made fuck-ups. Even though they were the catalyst for the season, they were both the most evolved. The other couple were sad sacks from the beginning and I didn’t get them at all. I understand season 2 will be a completely new cast.
I left this as a draft, but came on here to finish this thought. Heughan should be the next James Bond. He his 6’4 ginger Scot would be wasted if they don’t put him in the suit. I know they’re looking for younger like the Baby Girl actor, who’s great, but that means a year of bulking him up when you have Heughan ready to go. He doesn’t even have to fake a Scottish accent.
The opening of Casino Royale is what that IP needs. I think Heughan could create that. It just came to me when I was watching this soap opera and realized Amazon bought Bond. Bezos, take a gamble and choose the former ginger.
I have nothing else to add to this Bond post. It’s been a weird week.
