Flavors of Wine
A look at Drops of God, a new series on Apple TV about the world's largest wine collection up for grabs.
I enjoy a half bottle of wine… along with half of pound of pasta. Whenever a winery or tasting room is suggested, I volunteer as tribute because I know it’s coming with a boatload of carbs that’ll make it a great meal. Do I go for the wine or the bread? I’m not sure, but it turns out great anyway.
I need something playing in the background while I work on the computer and I just finished the latest episode of Our Friends and Neighbors. The backstory is complete and we’re dealing with the murder now. What I’ve taken away from the show so far is that the brown suede jacket is making a comeback. Is it a comeback or has it always been around but now I’m watching midlife television shows and I’m seeing it more? Either way, Hamm was sporting one with a black shirt and I wasn’t mad at it. I didn’t know we could mix these colors in an ensemble, but the brown had hints of moss green in it so maybe that’s why it looked tasteful. I love it when a guy wears a smart outfit, but rocks it casual.
The credits started to roll and the ad for Drops of God came on. The largest wine collection in the world is up for grabs between two competitors - the daughter of the previous owner and a savant from Tokyo. They both have backstories that are filled with sadness and pressure, but they’ve decided to concentrate their energy on landing this wine collection. The battle will be a taste test.
The show opens with the dad teaching his daughter how to distinguish between different flavors. I can tell the difference between a pear and a radish, but I don’t visualize hand-picking them from the garden when I taste it. What I can do if blindfolded, I can tell the difference between a Swiss Roll and a Ho-Ho. The texture of the chocolate outer layer and the density of the cake gives it away every time.
They’re now getting into the history of wine and how the flavors are chosen by chance. Our two opponents have just been told their task. They’re given a taste of wine and they have a moment to come up with the grape, vintage, and year of the wine. She no longer drinks alcohol and thinks it’s horrible that she’s being forced to take a taste test. This is when my pride kicks in. Does my pride over keeping my father’s collection outweigh my wounded pride if I don’t identify the correct wine? This show is stressful. The glass just exploded in her hand, that must have been some wine. Is there a supernatural element to this show? This is her second bloody nose in the first episode and it’s troubling.
I came for the wine tasting, but now I wonder if we’re supposed to root for one or the other to win the collection. He’s put together and professional and she’s sort of all over the place like she doesn’t want to be there. I wonder where this show is going.
Wine tasting is fun. I’m not good at placing a wine from taste, but I prefer reds when I’m stuffing my face. I’ve tagged along with people that know what they’re doing and I know a great wine when it goes down like water. I think I could binge this show with wine and enjoy myself. This show is worth checking out. The only downside is it’s multilinguel so you have to glance up from time-to-time when they switch from English. I haven’t watched a subtitled show in a while because I lack the ability to not have my laptop or phone open. I have to work on that.
Warning, halfway through episode two and I’m prepping food and have this. This show is suggestive. Watch with caution.
