Cold Dance
It turned out to be the series finale of 1923. It was a two hour finale that wrapped up a few storylines and I’m just going to go straight into spoilers because this was a lot. I saw this two days ago and I’m so glad I have this week off for spring break because some shows you have to sit with for a while.
For 7 episodes they have kept Alex and Spencer apart since they were separated out at sea in Europe two years ago. When they left her out in the middle of Montana in a single layer of clothing at the end of episode 6 I knew she was a goner. I know you’re sick of hearing about it, but I’ve lived that. 4 hours had me shaking in a hot shower. She was only alive two days later because her body was keeping the baby alive.
It was logical that she didn’t live, but it sucks that her story was written like that. I get it, he was explaining where Beth Dutton gets it from. It’s a beautiful origin story, but it’s so sad.
We all knew how this would end. There’s a reason they had an entire lifetime of memories in a short period of time. From Africa to Italy to getting lost at sea together; they lived an epic saga before being reunited in the middle of a Montana snowstorm. Is forty years comparable to a few adventures? Is it selfish to even ask that question?
He explained to her in the bar in season one that he was chasing death and she gladly followed. I reckon she was content with her choice. When she looked at him on the train platform and Elsa began to narrate I knew she was not long for this world. I’ve come to associate Elsa’s voice showing up in a Sheridan episode as a prelude to a character departing.
1944 is the next prequel coming up and I just believe the son has to be played by Josh Duhamel. Alexandra said he would be tall and I think we just need that North Dakota guy out on Yellowstone. John, Jr would only be 20, but there has to be a character for him to play because they haven’t lined up McConaughey for the continuation of Yellowstone. Is this show just a soap opera where we watch a bunch of hot cowboys brave the elements? I’m not mad at it.
The White Lotus finale gave us all fodder to talk about, but 1923 ripped our hearts out. I wholeheartedly believe the inspirations for Sheridan with this prequel were Out of Africa, The English Patient, and Titanic.
I love the 1920’s. With the Second World War happening with the next prequel, we’re going to have cowboys and a jukebox with delta blues. Sometime in the near future Sheridan is giving us a cowboy sitting with a bourbon in the Montana cold listening to delta blues. He knows his target audience and he’s giving it all to us.
With the Alex and Spencer storyline wrapped up and us knowing that their baby is John Dutton’s grandpa, I’m wondering who the unmarked Dutton grave is. Undoubtedly that story will be a tearjerker as well.
Seriously though, if Sheridan can get the Missouri boy in a cowboy hat, Paramount would dominate for that 7 week run. Could he do it? Could he get Brad Pitt in a cowboy hat? Let’s tell the truth, we’re all here because we grew up on Legends of the Fall.
Alex and Spencer are part of tv history. That story can’t be beat. There’s another half century of stories and I’m just curious to know who he’s getting into a hat next.
